FAQ
How long does the whole process take?
-Honestly this is all dependent on the client; depending on the amount of items, commitment time, and "joy checking" ability (which will only get stronger and more fine-tuned throughout the process). But on average I have found it takes 30-40 hours.
Do you work with other household members' items at the same time?
-I only work with one client at a time. So regardless of who else is living in the home (roommate/spouse/children etc) I will focus on you and your items.
Does it have to be at least 3 hours per session?
-Spending 3 or more hours has been proven to be most productive and not interrupt the flow once it's been found in a good tidying session.
Is this the same as minimalism?
-The KonMari Method® is not the same as minimalism. Though minimalism has some great qualities to it, I believe that the focus on JOY is what makes this method successful, as opposed to a focus on the amount or arbitrary keeping/discarding rules.
Can we do just one room/category?
-The way this method is set up has also been proven to be most successful when followed properly. It does take time and commitment, but it is so worth it. Starting first with the clothes category helps you hone your joy-checking skill and become better able to go through the rest of the items in the categories that follow. Sometimes when we start in a random category or area we may think we are not wasting time and are only addressing what needs help, but that ultimately proves to leave out items that reappear shortly after and create clutter.
Will I need to do this process again and again after we complete it once?
-Good news! Once you go through the entire tidying process it's a one and done deal! The daily maintenance is minimal and you won't have to do any major overhauls ever again. This is another wonderful quality of the KonMari Method®. Yes it's intense, but it's also so thorough and complete, that it's unnecessary to go through it again.
